The different window style options explained

Are you confused about which window style will suit your new home? You’re not alone. Because windows are one of the most important features of your home it's advisable to do some research and find the perfect style that will suit your needs and home design. So when you are looking for windows for your new home, taking the time to consider all options will benefit you in the long run.

Windows not only add to the appearance of your home, but they also let valuable light and ventilation into the building along with giving you visibility to the outside world. They also improve your home's insulation, help reduce noise levels, and enhance security.

In this article, we will explain the different window style options available to you so you can make an informed decision.

Your handy guide to window types

Casement Windows

Casement windows exemplify what the mid-century modern home is all about. This window style is known to work well in terms of function and design. Casement windows swing open to the left or right, usually by a hand crank at the bottom of the window.

Casement windows are sealed around all sides of the swinging window panel. This window style proves to be more energy efficient than sliding windows.

Bay Windows

Bay windows have a classic look and are permanently extended beyond the outside of house walls. This provides for wide peripheral views that flat windows can not.

Picture windows are fixed meaning they do not open. This style of window, however, does not provide ventilation. Although the side benefit of a picture window is improved energy efficiency due to the permanent seal.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are essentially casement windows that swing open vertically. This style of window is often used in bedrooms or in high or narrow places. Due to the crank mechanism which is often fitted, they are relatively easy to open and close, even if you need to reach up to operate them.

Horizontal Sliding Windows

Horizontal sliding windows are probably the most traditional and common style installed in Australian homes. They are versatile and relatively cost-effective. This window style is available in single-slider or double-slider varieties.

Horizontal sliding windows are considered less energy efficient than hinged windows and can accumulate dirt and grime in their sliding tracks.

Energy efficient windows

Believe it or not, the right window choice can make your home more energy efficient. When windows become old and worn, they are more likely to leak creating drafts or letting the cooling or heating out resulting in higher climate control costs.

Choosing the window style that works well with your home design and also offers the most practical option means they are less likely to keep the heat or cold out and keep internal temperatures comfortable all year round.
